Aluminum phosphide is produced by calcining red phosphorus and aluminum powder. It is widely used due to its high insecticidal efficacy and cost-effectiveness. For grain‑storage fumigation, it typically contains 56.0% to 85.0% aluminum phosphide, and is available in various tablet and granule forms. Fumigating one ton of grain requires only 3 to 7 tablets, while fumigating one cubic meter necessitates just 1 to 2 tablets. The primary toxicity of aluminum phosphide stems from its rapid decomposition upon contact with water or acids, releasing highly toxic phosphine gas that is rapidly absorbed.
